About my work / Sobre meus trabalhos

In my works I utilize both figurative and abstract approaches to explore questions related to personal, historical, art historical, aesthetic, social and political issues of our diverse life-worlds, individual and collective, and their intersections. Art registers and puts into perspective our experiences and their associated meanings, it is made of memories and anticipations, and in this way it contributes to the renewal of our symbolic universe and perspectives. It has therefore, whether acknowledge or not in the larger cultural context, a vital role to play in our emotional economy, in our self-understanding and our perspectives of action.

Em meus trabalhos, utilizo abordagens figurativas ou abstratas para explorar temas relacionados a questões pessoais, estéticas, culturais, sociais e políticas de nossos diversos “mundos de vida” (Lebesnwelt), individuais e coletivos, e suas intersecções. A arte registra e coloca em perspectiva nossas experiências e seus significados relacionados, é feita de memórias e antecipações e, dessa forma, contribui para a renovação do nosso universo simbólico e portanto para a formulação de novas perspectivas simbólicas. Tem, assim, um papel vital a desempenhar em nossa economia emocional, em nossa autocompreensão e em nossas perspectivas de ação, seja este papel reconhecido ou não no contexto cultural geral do tempo.

Marcelo Guimarães Lima

Marcelo Guimarães Lima (Rio de Janeiro, 1952) is a visual artist, teacher, researcher and writer. He studied Philosophy at the Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil (BA 1978), Studio Art and History of Art at the University of New Mexico, USA (MFA 1986, PhD 1988). He is the author of "Heterochronia and Vanishing Viewpoints" (Metasenta, Melbourne, 2012) and of essays, papers and articles on the History of Art, Philosophy, Art Criticism, Psychology of Art and related subjects. His artworks have been exhibited in Brazil, the USA, Australia, France, Portugal, Romania, the UAE. He taught History of Art and Studio Art in the USA (University of Illinois, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Goddard College) and the UAE (American University of Dubai) and, as guest lecturer/ visiting scholar, in Spain (Universidad de Salamanca, Uiversidad Internacional de Andalucia). He directed community based art projects in Brazil and the USA.
